LCM Company Explains Seven Stages of Professional Upholstery Cleaning in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte, North Carolina Oct 12, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Two sofas may require completely different cleaning methods, even when they look alike. LCM Company, a Charlotte-based upholstery cleaning specialist, explains the process behind professional deep upholstery cleaning and why fabric assessment matters before any cleaning begins.

Understanding Upholstery Cleaning Codes

Furniture labels commonly use four cleaning codes:

• W: Water-based cleaning permitted.

• S: Solvent-based cleaning only.

• W/S: Either method may be suitable.

• X: Vacuuming only.

Cotton, linen, and wool require different precautions than polyester or microfiber. Velvet and chenille need careful handling of the pile, while leather is cleaned manually and conditioned.

Seven Stages of Professional Upholstery Cleaning

1. Fabric Inspection and Testing

The technician evaluates fabric composition, cleaning codes, existing stains, and cushion construction. When a care label is missing, testing an inconspicuous area helps determine an appropriate method.

2. Dry Vacuuming

Professional vacuuming removes dust, pet hair, crumbs, and loose debris before moisture is introduced. This prevents dry soil from interfering with subsequent treatment.

3. Targeted Stain Treatment

Ink, grease, adhesive, paint, and protein-based stains require different cleaning chemistry. Specialized spotters are selected according to the contamination rather than using one product for everything.

4. Prespray and Agitation

A fabric-compatible prespray loosens accumulated body oils, food residue, and embedded dirt. Enzyme-based treatments may be used for certain organic contamination. Gentle agitation improves cleaning effectiveness when appropriate.

5. Deep Cleaning and Hot Water Extraction

For suitable fabrics, hot water extraction (HWE) rinses suspended soil from upholstery while recovering moisture and cleaning solution. Delicate materials may require low-moisture or solvent-based alternatives.

6. Acidic Rinse and pH Control

An appropriate rinse removes remaining cleaning residues. When necessary, an acidic rinse helps neutralize alkaline residues, reduce rapid re-soiling, and maintain suitable fabric pH.

7. Finishing and Drying

Final extraction removes additional moisture. Optional fabric protection and accelerated drying are available. Typical drying time is 8-10 hours, depending on fabric, humidity, and ventilation.

Common Questions About Upholstery Cleaning

Can professional cleaning eliminate pet odors?

Enzyme treatments can help address organic contamination, but urine that penetrates cushion filling may require additional treatment. Complete odor removal cannot always be guaranteed.

How much does professional cleaning cost?

LCM Company publishes its prices online. As of October 2026, a three-seat sofa costs $150, while a six- to seven-seat sectional costs $280. Customers can request estimates by submitting furniture photographs.
