Almost $17 Billion In Lost Life Insurance Found: Why 20,000 Families Turn To The American Estate Kit

Oct 13, 2026

CHEYENNE, Wyo, October 13, 2026 -- Ahead of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, The American Estate Kit reports that more than 20,000 families have used its estate organization kit to record the policies, accounts and documents their relatives would need.

The American Estate Kit, a publisher of estate organization kits for American families, today announced that more than 20,000 families have now used its materials, as new figures from state insurance regulators show that almost $17 billion in lost and unclaimed life insurance and annuity benefits has been matched to beneficiaries through a single national search tool.

According to figures released on September 3, 2026, by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the organization's Life Insurance Policy Locator had matched $16,991,229,586 in benefits through July 31, 2026, an increase of more than $3 billion since August 31, 2025. The tool has produced more than 780,000 matches since its launch in November 2016, and the NAIC notes that beneficiaries may be unable to find a loved one's policies or may not even know that the policies exist. A search can take 90 business days or more.

Other recent findings point in the same direction. On August 12, 2026, the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General reported that 17,979 beneficiaries who died between December 2022 and December 2024 owed approximately $240 million in outstanding overpayments, and that in 40 of 125 sampled cases the agency had made no attempt to recover the money from the estate. The agency agreed to strengthen its controls in response. Separately, a national survey of 5,000 U.S. adults conducted for Trust & Will and published in March 2026 found that 42 percent of Americans would not know what to do if a family member died today.

“The money is rarely lost because a company hides it. It is lost because nobody wrote down that the policy existed,” said a spokesperson for The American Estate Kit. “A single page listing every policy, account and beneficiary can be the difference between a phone call and a 90-day search, which is why we built the kit around the information a family needs from the first day.”

The American Estate Kit is built on the 48-6-9 System, which organizes the work into three windows: Secure in the first 48 hours, Notify in the first six months and Settle in the first nine months. Its Family Folder includes a Master List of accounts, beneficiaries and contacts, together with a State Quick Sheet covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 on the company's website, and the Essential Kit is available for $39 as a one-time purchase.

The announcement comes ahead of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, which runs from October 19 to 25, 2026. The company notes that a locator can only find what someone thinks to look for, and that the practical starting point for any household is to list each policy and account, name the beneficiary on each and tell a trusted person where that list is kept.
