Jeff Ifrah to Host Panel on iGaming with NBA

GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world.

Washington, D.C. - February 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

Attorney and iGaming investor and legal expert Jeff Ifrah has made his mark on the upcoming industry of virtual gaming and is being asked to lead a panel at the Global Interactive Summit and Expo to discuss the future of the growing market and the legalities surrounding sports betting and regulations. Ifrah will be presenting and moderating an interview with Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the National Basketball Association, Dan Spillane, at the GiGse trade convention (Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo) in San Francisco to discuss the NBA’s significant shift in its opinion on sports-betting, and the future possibility of its regulation in the U.S.

Since 2011, GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world who come to network, learn about new industry trends, and stay current on evolving gaming law. Ifrah’s highly anticipated interview with Spillane, which marks the first time a professional sports representative has participated in a gaming conference, will be enhanced by previously recorded interviews of leaders within the English Premier League, and leading US legislators pushing for sports betting regulation, all of which have been produced exclusively for the GiGse plenary session.

The NBA created a media stir with a notable November 2014 editorial by Commissioner Adam Silver, which called for the U.S. federal government to legalize sports betting as a way to make the inevitable pastime more transparent, safer for bettors, and subject to strict regulatory oversight. Illegal betting already accounts for $400 billion in wagers, by some estimates, primarily through unregulated offshore Internet services or the old fashioned backroom bookie. The article sent a seismic shock through the professional sports world, as the official NBA position for over twenty years had consistently opposed any expansion of sports betting. “Times are changing fast,” said Jeff Ifrah. “Ideas that were once unthinkable ten or even five years ago are now becoming more accepted as logic begins to supersede antiquated and sometimes arbitrary morality laws. The advantages of legal, regulated gambling clearly outweigh the negatives. Gambling happens, and no laws can stop it. But it can be taken out of the shadows to make it safer for everyone involved, especially the consumer who is currently at the mercy of unknown foreign website operators with no recourse for fraud. It’s great to see a prominent organization like the NBA take a bold position on the issue, and I look forward to my discussion with Dan Spillane at GiGse in April.”

Jeff Ifrah is the founding partner of Ifrah Law, based in Washington, DC, practicing law for more than twenty years, licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. For four years in a row, Chambers USA has recognized him as one of the leading U.S. attorneys for litigation in the areas of Gaming and Licensing, as well as White Collar Crime and Government Investigations. Most recently he was named “Local Litigation Star” in the District of Columbia by publication Benchmark Litigation. He has won numerous legal victories in criminal and civil antitrust suits, representing some of the biggest corporations in the country within the industries of healthcare, pharmaceuticals and technology.

Feds: Uber self-driving SUV saw pedestrian, did not brake

May 24, 2018

DETROIT — The autonomous Uber SUV that struck and killed an Arizona pedestrian in March spotted the woman about six seconds before hitting her, but did not stop because the system used to automatically apply brakes in potentially dangerous situations had been disabled, according to federal investigators. In a preliminary report on the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday that emergency braking is not enabled while Uber's cars are under computer control, "to reduce the potential for erratic vehicle behavior." Instead, Uber relies on a human backup driver to intervene. The system, however, is not designed to alert...

Michigan Supreme Court justice: Judges must cool rhetoric

May 24, 2018

DETROIT — A Michigan Supreme Court justice has a message for judges who seem to seek vengeance: cool it, folks. Justice Bridget McCormack said judges should drop rhetoric that "would validly call into question judicial impartiality." She said it's important these days, especially "when our norms of public discourse appear under stress." McCormack was referring to a Jackson County case involving a man who broke into the home of a police officer and trashed it, even breaking a 100-gallon (380-liter) aquarium. Judge John McBain said he wished the officer would have returned home in time. "Because you know what?" McBain...

License to chill: MI6 tries to shed macho James Bond image

May 24, 2018

LONDON — We meet again, Mr. Bond — or maybe not. Britain's MI6 intelligence service has made its first-ever television ad, aiming to banish macho James Bond-style imagery and attract more women and ethnic-minority recruits. The TV spot shows a shark gliding through an aquarium, watched by a child who backs away nervously before being comforted by his mother. A voiceover says that, as an intelligence officer, "it is not keeping your cool in the shark tank, it is picking up the silent cues that matter." The ad, airing Thursday on British TV, ends: "MI6: Secretly we are just like...

APNewsBreak: Ethics complaint made over 2017 reporter attack

May 24, 2018

HELENA, Mont. — The head of the Montana Democratic Party on Thursday asked for a congressional ethics investigation into whether Republican U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte lied to the police and the public when he assaulted a reporter last year. The request by the party's executive director, Nancy Keenan, comes exactly one year after Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs said Gianforte "body slammed" him for asking a question the day before Gianforte won a special election for Montana's only U.S. House seat. The former technology entrepreneur is running for re-election in November. Gianforte eventually pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and said Jacobs...

Trump signs bill easing post-2008 crisis restraints on banks

May 24, 2018

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Thursday signed into law a measure that loosens key restraints for banks imposed after the 2008 financial crisis and Great Recession. Savoring the legislative triumph, he called it "the next step in America's unprecedented economic comeback." The Republican-crafted bill passed Congress on Tuesday with the help of some Democratic votes and allowed Trump to fulfill his campaign pledge of dismantling the landmark Dodd-Frank law. The 2010 law was enacted by President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress in response to the crisis that brought millions of lost jobs and foreclosed homes. Trump held a...
