October 12, 2017 —

The Spa and Sauna Company, a hot tub, swim spa and sauna dealer with 3 retail showrooms serving the greater Fernley, Reno and Lake Tahoe area shares tips for emotional well-being.

Scott Clark, president of The Spa and Sauna Company says that good emotional health is vital to a happy life and helping people deal with challenges in a positive manner.

Relax and Get Rid of Sensory Overload – Sensory overload used to be a relatively rare problem, but today, surrounded by electronic gadgets, constant work issues, crowded roads and even shoulder-to-shoulder pedestrian traffic, people are constantly bombarded with stimuli that can cause exhaustion and anxiety.

Dealing with things that are unavoidable on a daily basis is one of the most important steps in regaining emotional strength. A great way to do that is to soak in a hot tub or portable spa on a regular basis.

The temperature controlled heat allows total relaxation while the soothing jet massage relieves tight muscles and stress. Hot tubs installed in the yard or on a patio make it simple to have constant access to stress relief at any time of the day or night. In fact, not having to deal with traffic to get to a spa and not having to share the hot tub with strangers also increases the value of a backyard spa.

Avoid Drama – Take the time to recognize stressful situations and catch them before they start. Sometimes, it may not be possible to completely avoid stressful situations and drama, but don’t let those times become overwhelming. Instead, take control of them, speak assertively and refuse to take part in gossip or take on more duties than are manageable.

Positivity is Contagious – One of the simplest things people can do to manage their emotions, control outside negativity and be happier, is to smile. Being positive is contagious, but people often allow negativity to take over. Simply smiling in stressful situations allows the body to relax, even if others in the surrounding area do not comply and follow suit. Surprisingly, smiling and being happy through a tough situation can have a great effect on everyone, helping them to become happier and more relaxed as well.

Hospital cited over woman left in cold in hospital gown

Mar 20, 2018

BALTIMORE — Federal regulators have cited a Baltimore hospital in connection with a January incident in which a mentally ill woman was discharged and left at an open-air bus stop wearing only a flimsy gown and socks. The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday that a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services investigation found the University of Maryland Medical Center violated patient rights as well as several patient safety and hospital management regulations. The 22-year-old woman had been treated for a head wound, but authorities say she became resistant while being discharged. Security intervened and escorted the visibly disoriented woman outside, where...

APNewsBreak: Key design change stymied bridge cost, schedule

Mar 20, 2018

MIAMI — Construction of the pedestrian bridge that collapsed and killed six people in the Miami area was behind schedule and millions over budget, in part because of a key change in the design and placement of one of its support towers. Documents obtained by The Associated Press through a public-records request show that the Florida Department of Transportation in October 2016 advised Florida International University and its contractors to move one of the bridge's main support structures 11 feet (3 meters) north to the edge of a canal, widening the gap between the crossing's end supports and requiring some...

San Francisco becomes largest US city to ban fur sales

Mar 20, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco supervisors voted unanimously to ban the sale of fur, further burnishing the city's animal-loving credentials as it becomes the largest U.S. city to approve the prohibition. Animal welfare advocates around the world cheered news of Tuesday's vote, applauding the city for its compassion and hoping that the legislation will catch on. The ban takes effect Jan. 1 and applies to anything featuring real fur, including key chains and gloves. An amendment added Tuesday allows furriers and other retailers to sell current inventory until January 1, 2020. Wayne Hsiung, co-founder of animal rights network Direct Action...

Minneapolis officer charged in shooting of Australian woman

Mar 20, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis police officer was charged Tuesday with murder and manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed Australian woman in July minutes after she called 911 to report a possible sexual assault behind her home. Officer Mohamed Noor turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He shot Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a 40-year-old life coach, on July 15. Damond's death drew international attention, cost the police chief her job and forced major revisions to the department's policy on body cameras. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said the law makes it difficult to charge police...
