Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin launches spacecraft higher than ever

Jul 18, 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket company shot a capsule higher into space Wednesday than it's ever done before. The New Shepard rocket blasted off from West Texas on the company's latest test flight. Once the booster separated, the capsule's escape motor fired, lifting the spacecraft to an altitude of 389,846 feet. That's 74 miles or 119 kilometers. It's part of a safety system intended to save lives once space tourists and others climb aboard for suborbital hops. Wednesday's passenger was Mannequin Skywalker, an instrumented dummy in a blue flight suit that's flown before, plus science experiments....

Florida mayor apologizes for fight over 'Starry Night' home

Jul 18, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. — A Florida mayor apologized Wednesday to a couple fined thousands of dollars for having their home's exterior painted to emulate Vincent van Gogh's "The Starry Night." The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Mount Dora City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday that Lubomir Jastrzebski and Nancy Nemhauser can keep the blue-and-yellow paint swirled on their walls in the style of van Gogh's masterpiece. The settlement also requires the city to pay them $15,000 and remove a property lien to end the nearly yearlong code enforcement case. Mayor Nick Girone publicly apologized to the couple Wednesday at city hall, adding...

Jay-Z unhappy 'Made in America' leaving Philadelphia parkway

Jul 18, 2018

PHILADELPHIA — Jay-Z says he's disappointed his Philadelphia "Made in America" festival will not be held in "the heart of the city" after this year. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the city confirmed Tuesday that the annual concert won't be on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway anymore. A city spokeswoman said the event was originally intended as a Labor Day weekend attraction during a slow time but that "may no longer be necessary." In a Wednesday column in the Inquirer, Jay-Z accused the city of making the decision without a "meeting, notice, dialogue or proper communication." He said the festival has since...

Trump-Kim statement overpromised on return of war remains

Jul 18, 2018

WASHINGTON — More than a month after North Korea pledged to immediately return some American war dead, the promise is unfulfilled. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who traveled to Pyongyang this month to press the North Koreans further, said Wednesday the return could begin "in the next couple of weeks." But it could take months or years to positively identify the bones as those of specific American servicemen. In a joint statement at their Singapore summit, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un committed to recovering the remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action...

Study links air pollution to drop in national park visitors

Jul 18, 2018

DENVER — Visitors appear to be steering clear of some U.S. national parks or cutting visits short because of pollution levels that are comparable to what's found in major cities, according to a study released Wednesday. Researchers at Iowa State and Cornell universities looked at more than two decades of data on ozone pollution at 33 parks — from Shenandoah to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. They say visitor numbers dropped almost 2 percent when ozone levels went up even slightly and by at least 8 percent in months with three or more days of high ozone levels compared...
