Trump vows veto as Democrats try to block emergency order

Feb 23, 2019

WASHINGTON — Democrats controlling the House have teed up a vote next week to block President Donald Trump from using a national emergency declaration to fund a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, accelerating a showdown in Congress that could divide Republicans and lead to Trump's first veto. The Democrats introduced a resolution Friday to block Trump's declaration, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House would vote on the measure Tuesday. It is sure to pass, and the GOP-run Senate may adopt it as well. Trump quickly promised a veto. "Will I veto it? 100 percent," Trump told reporters at...

SAN DIEGO — The eight border-wall prototypes President Donald Trump inspected during a visit to California in March are going to be torn down to make way for a second barrier separating California and Mexico, the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Protection said Friday. Construction crews have replaced one layer of fencing along a 14-mile (23-kilometer) stretch of the border separating Mexico and California. Crews recently started work on replacing and extending secondary fence as well. Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco said Friday it isn't clear when the prototypes will come down. But he added money has already been...

Feb 23, 2019

ORLANDO, Fla. — Lauri Markkannen shooting free throws was a fitting way for the Chicago Bulls to finish off the Orlando Magic on Friday night. After being fouled by Aaron Gordon on a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left, Markannen missed the first attempt — the Bulls' only miss of the game in 19 attempts — and made the next two for a 111-109 victory. The Magic missed 11 of 24 free throws, two by B.J. Augustin with 34 seconds left. He went into the game as the NBA's 12th-leading free-throw shooter at 87.3 percent. "When you look back at the...

Sen. Warren: US needs to address 'ugly history of racism'

Feb 23, 2019

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who said earlier this week that she supports reparations for black Americans who have been affected by slavery, told reporters Friday that the nation needs to confront its "ugly history of racism" and "talk about the right way to address it and make change." Warren addressed race in a speech Friday to New Hampshire Democrats, but didn't speak specifically about reparations. She said black families in America have been disadvantaged by "structural racism" and have only $5 in wealth for every $100 in wealth owned by the average white family. "Race matters and we...
