Abe visits Darwin shrine to Japanese war dead

Nov 17, 2018

SYDNEY — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited a shrine in Darwin, Australia, commemorating the deaths of 80 Japanese submariners in waters near the city in World War II. Abe arrived in Darwin on Friday for meetings with Australian counterpart Scott Morrison, becoming the first leader of Japan to visit the northern port city since it was bombed by Japanese forces in 1942. After laying a wreath with Morrison to remember the 240 people estimated to have died in the Darwin bombings, Abe on Saturday honored servicemen from his own country killed in a lesser-known incident, at a memorial...

Dem struggle over Pelosi bid, with no end game in sight

Nov 17, 2018

WASHINGTON — Democrats won the majority. Now they just need a speaker of the House. The standoff over Nancy Pelosi's bid to regain the gavel intensified Friday as Democrats left Washington for the Thanksgiving holiday, an unsettling finish to an otherwise triumphant week that saw them welcome a historic class of newcomers to Capitol Hill and prepare to take control. Pelosi was certain that she will be speaker once more, reviving her role as the first woman to wield the gavel. But her foes were equally confident they have the votes to stop her. For now, it's a band of...

Panel dismisses ethics charges against Arkansas justices

Nov 17, 2018

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A disciplinary panel dismissed ethics charges Friday against the Arkansas Supreme Court's justices over their decision to prohibit a judge who participated in an anti-death penalty demonstration from hearing any execution-related cases. The Arkansas Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission voted unanimously to dismiss the charges that the court's seven justices violated ethics rules when they disqualified Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen. The court last year prohibited Griffen from hearing death penalty cases after he was photographed laying on a cot during a demonstration outside the governor's mansion wearing an anti-death penalty button and surrounded by...

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Friday recognized a major Republican Party donor and six other "extraordinary Americans" with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the nation reserves for a civilian. Individuals who make "outstanding contributions to American life and culture" have received the medal, Trump said, adding that it was his "true privilege" to present it to six men and one woman representing the fields of entertainment, sports, law, medicine, politics and philanthropy. Miriam Adelson is a doctor, philanthropist and wife of Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino magnate considered one of the nation's most powerful Republican...

Migrants won't see armed soldiers on border

Nov 17, 2018

SAN DIEGO — As thousands of migrants in a caravan of Central American asylum-seekers converge on the doorstep of the United States, what they won't find are armed American soldiers standing guard. Instead they will see cranes installing towering panels of metal bars and troops wrapping concertina wire around barriers while military helicopters fly overhead, carrying border patrol agents to and from locations along the U.S.-Mexico border. That's because U.S. military troops are prohibited from carrying out law enforcement duties. What's more, the bulk of the troops are in Texas — hundreds of miles away from the caravan that started...
